A Conversation With James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni on SOUL!
Happy Black History Month….
On the first day of Black History Month, we noticed the “Google Doodle” was of the reverent and intellectual James Baldwin. The above clip is of a young and inquisitive Nikki Giovanni and what would be considered her elder at the time, James Baldwin, on the TV show, SOUL! , having a very distinguished conversation. SOUL! was a series produced by Ellis B Haizlip that ran from 1968 to 1973. As such a groundbreaking show for African Americans, SOUL! was later called, Americas, first “Black Tonights Show”. Some of their guests included Harry Belafonte, Al Green, Muhammad Ali and Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee to name a few. This conversation that took place when Mr. Haizlip had Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin on the show was recorded in London, England. Nikki and James went on to discuss some of the many issues that black Americans were facing at that time and even still today. Take a listen as we hope you’ll enjoy the eloquence and “down-rightness” that both of these Creatives display as they invite us into their “think tank”. Enjoy!
